Learning Basic HTML: Chapter 2

Basic Concepts

In last tutorial we saw, how the page is displayed in browser. Now let’s get started with learning HTML in more detail.

Pre requisite for HTML:

HTML is a basic Markup language and is written in plain text. That means there is no need of any expensive software program like word processor is needed. Creating a HTML is very easy in any simple text editor, which is already present in our system. For windows user, a simple Notepad will do.

First and foremost, the HTML tags are always enveloped by angle brackets “<” and “>”

Elements:

Elements are the words or letters which are placed between the angle brackets. These are basically the coded commands of HTML, which helps browser to display the web page in desired format.

Eg: <hr> tells the browser to display a horizontal rule; <br> tells it to skip one line.

Tags:

There are two types of tags:

  • Container Tags: The container tags are wrapped around text or graphics. Container tags come with an opening and closing set.

e.g. : <div> opening Tag

</div> closing tag

The forward slash (/) in the closing tag tells the browser that the tag has ended.

  • Empty Tags: the empty tags are single tags, like <br> for line break . the empty tags do not need closing tags.

Case Sense:

Html is not case sensitive. That means, either of the cases, lower or uppercase can be used. For eg: <HTML> is similar to <html>. But for consistency , use only one of the case for particular document.

HTML structure:
HTML documents are categorized into two parts:

  • Head
  • Body

HTML

The <html>, <head> and <body> container tags are include in every HTML file.

The <html> tag symbolizes it’s an HTML document. A HTML document should always begin and end with this set of tag.

The <head> tag can contain general information of document like Tile or main heading.

The <body> tag holds the content, pictures, words, artwork, etc.

Nesting:

Individual part of the web structure is called nesting. As the tag <title> is nested inside the <head> tag, while <head> and <body> are nested inside <html>.

All new tags are nested inside other tags ,linking and making it a complete document.

There are many HTML training institutes in Nagpur offering advance course.
